Offering a chronicle of the key events that helped shape race relations in America, the National Civil Rights Museum begins its tale with the earliest slave trades of the 17th century, moving through the fight for freedom and the resultant Civil War of the mid-19th century. Much of its exhibit space is dedicated to the civil rights movement of the 20th century, featuring national figures like Rosa Parks and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and using life-sized walk-through exhibits like a segregated lunch counter and the burned shell of a freedom ride Greyhound Bus. The museum occupies the former Lorraine Motel, site of Dr. King's assassination, about half a mile south of the FedExForum, where the Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Museum resides.
